Not All Cops Are Bad... But This Night Was Different
Before I begin, I want to make something clear: I don’t believe all cops are bad. I have family and friends who serve as police officers, and I respect their service. But I do believe there are bad apples in the bunch. And on this particular night, my wife and I encountered one.
We were driving home, just a regular night. Suddenly, two police cruisers pulled us over. One officer approached and asked:
“Do you know why I stopped you?”
I replied, “No officer, we weren’t speeding. We have our seatbelts on. No, I don’t know why.”
He said the reason was that the light above our license plate was out.
Now, I’ve been stopped before for things like a headlight or brake light being out. Usually, you get a citation, fix the issue, show proof in court, and the case is dismissed. Sometimes, you just get a warning.
So naturally, I thought this would be the same.
Then he asked:
“Do you want to step out of the car to see what I’m talking about?”
I said, “No officer, if you’re telling me the light is out, I believe you.”
But then he said:
“I’ll tell you what, why don’t you step out of the car?”
And started pulling on my door handle.
🙏 Thank God my door was locked.
At that moment, the second officer jumped out of his cruiser and shouted:
“What? He’s refusing to get out?”
That’s when I hit the emergency button in my mobile app and got an attorney on the line. She asked:
“Why is he trying to get you out of the car?”
I told her I’d put her on speaker. She began speaking directly to the officer.
He paused, said:
“Hold on for a sec,”
…walked back to his car. Three minutes later, he returned, handed me a citation for the light, and said:
“Have a good night.”
The attorney stayed on the line with me until I got home safely.
And to me, that was priceless. 💛
🛡️The Power of Being Prepared
That night could have gone very differently.
I wasn’t aggressive. I wasn’t confrontational. I was calm, respectful, and compliant.
But something about the officer’s behavior felt off—and my instincts were right.
Having immediate access to legal support changed everything.
It didn’t just protect my rights—it protected my peace, my dignity, and my safety.
And it reminded me that we don’t have to face these moments alone.
I still believe in good officers. I still believe in accountability.
But I also believe in being prepared.
Because when things escalate without reason, you need someone in your corner.
